Nvidia Under Pressure From All Sides

The company that defined the AI chip era is starting to look encircled. A new analysis flags Meta's in-house chip development as a threat markets haven't priced in — a slow-moving but structurally significant challenge from one of Nvidia's largest customers. Simultaneously, ByteDance, whose AI systems operate at extraordinary scale, is in active talks to buy at least 50,000 chips from Shanghai-based Iluvatar CoreX and is considering a parallel supply deal with Baidu — a deliberate, operational pivot away from Nvidia dependency, not a hedge. And startup Tensordyne, which this week completed the tapeout of a new inference chip it claims runs at 10x lower power per token than GPUs, says it expects more than $200 million in orders. No single threat dismantles Nvidia's position. Collectively, they represent a market fragmenting in ways the dominant player can't fully control.

AMD Crosses $900 Billion

While Nvidia faces structural pressure, its closest Western rival is hitting milestones. Advanced Micro Devices surpassed a $900 billion market capitalization this week for the first time, lifted by continued Wall Street confidence in its AI chip roadmap. Wolfe Research remains bullish. The number reflects how completely the AI infrastructure buildout has re-rated the semiconductor sector — even the runner-up is now worth nearly a trillion dollars.

China's Chip Independence Crystallizes

Several threads converged today around China's push for semiconductor self-sufficiency. Shanghai Enflame Technology — Tencent-backed and known in the industry as "Little Dragon" — received approval for an $888 million IPO on a Shanghai exchange, making it the last of China's major homegrown AI chip companies to go public. ByteDance's procurement talks with domestic suppliers signal that Chinese tech giants are now making real purchasing decisions around local chips, not just running pilots.

Further up the stack, China announced its first domestic mass production of silicon-28 isotopes enriched to more than 99.99% purity — a materials milestone for quantum computing. Silicon-28 is essential for building high-coherence quantum chips, and domestic production removes a critical supply dependency from China's longer-term quantum roadmap.

Broadcom Anchors a Gigawatt for Anthropic

On the infrastructure buildout side, Broadcom announced a joint venture with private equity giants Apollo and Blackstone to fund a full gigawatt of AI computing capacity for Anthropic, the safety-focused lab behind the Claude model family. A gigawatt represents serious physical scale — large campus-level power draw. The involvement of Apollo and Blackstone signals that private capital isn't just financing AI; it's moving to own the underlying infrastructure outright.

TSMC's 2nm Pricing Opens a Door for Samsung

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company is raising prices on its cutting-edge 2nm process node, and the hikes are steep enough that Nvidia, Apple, and Google are reportedly weighing Samsung's foundry operation as a potential alternative. TSMC's manufacturing lead has long made its pricing effectively non-negotiable for leading-edge customers. That calculus may be shifting — and for Samsung, which has struggled to land top-tier customers at the frontier, this is the clearest opening it has had in years.
