OpenAI Goes Shopping — for People and a Country

The day's biggest thread runs straight through OpenAI. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that Paul Meade, the Apple vice president who ran the Vision Pro headset and the company's smart-glasses effort, is leaving to join OpenAI's hardware team. MSN framed it bluntly: OpenAI is poaching one of Apple's top hardware leaders as the Jony Ive-led device race heats up. For a company best known for software, pulling a senior headset and wearables executive out of Cupertino is a clear statement of intent — OpenAI wants to build things you can hold, not just talk to.

It's also expanding its map. OpenAI named Prabhjeet Singh, formerly Uber's President for India and South Asia, as its Managing Director for India, with Bloomberg and Firstpost both confirming the appointment. Hiring a seasoned local operator signals that India isn't an afterthought market but a priority worth a dedicated leadership bet.

The Real Bottleneck Is Compute

Beneath the talent moves sits a harder constraint: there simply isn't enough computing power to go around. The Financial Times reports that Google told Meta it couldn't sell all the Gemini computing capacity Meta wanted — and, in a related account relayed by Bloomberg, that Google has capped its rival's access to Gemini AI altogether. When two of the largest players in AI bump into the same ceiling, it tells you the scarcity is structural, not a one-off.

That scarcity is fueling an infrastructure gold rush. Dell is teaming with Nvidia to build servers tuned for AI workloads under an "AI Factory" banner, per AI Magazine. Penguin Solutions (PENG) earned a spot as an Nvidia AI Factory Specialized Partner, according to Yahoo Finance — another node in Nvidia's growing partner network. And optical networking is being pitched, via an Intellectia AI report, as the new communication backbone for AI: as data centers strain, moving information at the speed of light becomes the differentiator.

Not every big idea survives contact with reality, though. Elon Musk has floated building data centers in space, but the concept is drawing skeptics — and SoftBank's CEO, a figure whose opinion carries real weight in tech, told TechCrunch he's among the doubters. When one of AI infrastructure's biggest backers won't endorse orbital compute, the idea's runway gets shorter.

The Bill Lands on Consumers

All this AI ambition has a price, and increasingly it's showing up on store shelves. The BBC reports that several firms are blaming the AI boom for recent "mega" price rises on everyday gadgets and consoles, with Xbox among the examples cited. The narrative is becoming familiar: demand for AI-grade chips and capacity ripples outward, and consumers feel it.

There's at least one bright spot for buyers. Tom's Hardware notes that Gigabyte's Aero X16 gaming laptop, packing Nvidia's RTX 5060, has dropped to $1,099 — a $300 cut. Proof that even in a tightening market, competition still occasionally bends prices the right way.
