Memory Becomes the New Bottleneck

Nvidia Goes Long on Japan

China Works to Loosen Nvidia's Grip
While Nvidia expands, Chinese firms are pushing to weaken its hold — sharpened by ongoing US export curbs on Nvidia's advanced processors. Alibaba open-sourced its chip software as domestic GPU makers try to erode the dominance of Nvidia's CUDA platform, following similar moves by Huawei. A Chinese company unveiled next-generation optical links capable of wiring together thousands of chips, a potential answer to the interconnect problem that makes large clusters hard to scale. And telecom-equipment maker ZTE rolled out an AI "supernode" as the export restrictions bite. The manufacturers underneath all of this are booming. TSMC, the world's largest contract chipmaker, posted strong second-quarter growth, and both TSMC and ASML reported record results — the clearest sign yet that demand for advanced chipmaking capacity shows no sign of cooling. These two names sit at chokepoints of the global supply chain, so their records read as a barometer for the whole industry.
Edge AI and the Open-Source Question
Two longer-horizon themes rounded out the day. The push to run large AI models directly on devices, rather than in distant data centers, is shifting from nice-to-have to hard requirement — raising the question of whether edge chips can keep up with the demand. And analysts are asking whether AI-designed, open-source chips could eventually crack the moat that Synopsys has spent decades building in chip-design software. Neither is settled, but both point the same direction: the assumptions holding today's chip hierarchy in place are being tested from several sides at once.
