The message was hard to miss — China wants to lead not just in AI software, but in the physical bodies that carry it.
Not everyone is joining the frenzy on the hiring side. As tech giants pour money into recruiting top AI and robotics engineers, Agility Robotics — described as a leading startup in the field — told Business Insider it won't play the "bidding war" for talent. It's a notable stance in a market where compensation for elite researchers has become its own arms race.
Robots are also headed somewhere less flashy than a trade show: a classroom. A humanoid named Sally is preparing to step into a New York high school in what's being described as a first-of-its-kind experiment in the United States, teaching AI to students.
Apple Takes OpenAI to Court
The day's biggest corporate clash: Apple has filed a trade secret lawsuit against OpenAI. According to Yahoo Finance, the central question is whether the case could complicate OpenAI's push into consumer hardware. With OpenAI increasingly eyeing devices, a legal fight with the world's most valuable hardware company puts real weight on its ambitions beyond the chatbot.
The Power Bill Comes Due
AI's appetite for electricity is colliding with the physical world. According to Semiconductor Engineering, data center buildouts are running into limits that go well beyond code and chips — power, politics and parts are all becoming bottlenecks.
The most striking flashpoint is legal. Per Tom's Hardware, citing a report, power companies could invoke eminent domain — the old tool for seizing private land — to build the infrastructure feeding AI data centers. It's a sign of how far the boom's demands now reach into everyday life and property rights.
Quantum's Mixed Signals
Two quantum stories cut in opposite directions. On the practical side, Deutsche Bahn — Europe's largest railway operator — put quantum computing to a real test, working with IQM Quantum Computers to schedule 190 actual train trips, according to a Business Wire announcement.
But the technology's exclusivity took a hit: ScienceDaily reports that researchers carried out a calculation long thought to require a quantum computer on nothing more than an ordinary laptop — a reminder that the line between quantum and classical problems is blurrier than the hype suggests.
Platforms and Cameras Adjust
YouTube is drawing a sharper line on "AI slop." Per TechCrunch, the company updated its monetization policies to more precisely define which AI-generated and upsetting videos won't be allowed to earn ad money. And Adobe's experimental Project Indigo iPhone camera app — which launched last year promising a "more natural (SLR-like) look," as The Verge describes it — is taking an unexpected turn by adding generative AI, a notable pivot for an app built on the pitch of authenticity.
