Robotics firm 1X has unveiled a major hardware upgrade for its Neo humanoid robot: a new pair of hands designed to approach human-level dexterity.

According to Nextbigfuture, the hands feature a 25 degree-of-freedom (DOF), tendon-driven design that the company describes as a breakthrough in achieving near-human dexterity and strength. Interesting Engineering reports the same tendon-driven system, noting the robot can use its hands to build LEGO and catch balls.

The upgrade goes beyond raw movement. Firstpost reports the new hands can sense touch, detect when an object is slipping, and even be washed.
