A new agricultural robot is designed to do one of farming's most dangerous jobs so that people don't have to: working inside grain bins. According to Interesting Engineering, the machine is built to keep farmers out of these towering storage structures altogether.
Grain bins are hazardous because stored grain can behave less like a solid and more like quicksand. When grain bridges, clumps, or clogs, farmers have traditionally climbed inside to break it up or clear blockages. Doing so puts them at risk of being pulled under and trapped, a well-documented cause of injury and death on farms.

By sending a machine into the bin to handle the grain that gets stuck or needs moving, the technology removes the human from the most dangerous part of the process.
