Alibaba is moving to challenge one of the most powerful advantages Nvidia holds in the artificial intelligence race: not its chips, but the software that ties developers to them.

According to the South China Morning Post, the Chinese technology giant is targeting Nvidia's dominant software ecosystem with an open-source AI stack. Rather than competing solely on hardware, Alibaba's approach aims at the layer of software that developers use to build and run AI systems on top of chips.

That distinction matters. Nvidia's lead in AI has long rested not only on its high-performance processors but also on a mature software ecosystem that many developers already know and rely on. Once teams build their tools around that ecosystem, switching to a rival becomes costly and difficult — a form of lock-in that helps keep Nvidia dominant even as competitors release capable chips.

By releasing an open-source stack, Alibaba is betting that developers will be more willing to adopt an alternative if the underlying software is free to use, inspect, and modify. Open-source strategies can lower the barrier to entry and build a community around a platform, chipping away at the advantages an entrenched incumbent enjoys.
