A man living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) has become what researchers are calling the first sustained, everyday user of a brain-computer interface (BCI) that allows him to speak — marking a shift from laboratory milestone to real-world tool.
Casey Harrell, who is paralyzed due to ALS, has had a set of electrodes embedded in his brain for nearly three years, according to MIT Technology Review. He first used the implant to produce spoken sentences — with the support of a research team — in 2023. Since then, he has continued to use the device regularly, earning him the informal designation of "the first power user" of this type of brain implant.
BCIs work by detecting electrical signals generated when a person intends to move or speak, then translating those signals into output a computer can act on — in this case, synthesized speech. For people with ALS, a disease that progressively destroys the nerve cells controlling muscle movement, this kind of technology offers a potential path to communication after natural speech is lost.
What makes Harrell's case notable is not just that the device worked in a research setting, but that he has continued using it over an extended period — a sign that the technology may be maturing beyond proof-of-concept demonstrations toward something closer to a practical assistive device.
If BCIs can move from one-time experiments to tools people rely on daily, it could fundamentally change the options available to the hundreds of thousands of people worldwide living with ALS and similar conditions.
