Four Kelvin is roughly minus 269 degrees Celsius — close to the coldest temperatures in the known universe. That kind of deep cooling matters because quantum computers depend on it: the fragile quantum states that make these machines powerful only hold together when surrounding heat and vibration are stripped away. A dilution refrigerator is the specialized hardware that does this job, and it is one of the most demanding pieces of equipment in the entire quantum stack.
