Amazon's self-driving car unit, Zoox, has issued a software recall after one of its robotaxis was confused by heavy smoke, according to reports from TechCrunch and CNBC.
The company said that last month, one of its unoccupied robotaxis drove into an active emergency fire scene that was clouded with smoke, as CNBC reported. In response, Zoox is pushing out a software update — the modern equivalent of a recall, which for autonomous vehicles typically means fixing code rather than swapping out physical parts.
The timing is notable. According to TechCrunch, the recall comes as the top automotive safety regulator in the United States has warned autonomous-vehicle companies about their vehicles interfering with first responders. In other words, regulators were already worried about exactly the kind of situation Zoox describes: a driverless car wandering into a scene where firefighters, police, or paramedics are working.
Smoke is a hard problem for the cameras, radar, and sensors that self-driving cars rely on to "see" the world. When visibility drops and the road is crowded with emergency crews and equipment, a car that can't correctly read the scene could get in the way of people trying to save lives or put out a fire.
Zoox is owned by Amazon, one of several deep-pocketed tech giants racing to put robotaxis on public streets. Incidents like this feed directly into the central question hanging over the entire industry: whether these vehicles can handle the messy, unpredictable edge cases of real-world driving.
