AMD's next generation of desktop processors may go after a problem that raw benchmark numbers tend to hide: the brief hitches and hiccups that break the feeling of a smooth game.

According to Tom's Hardware, a new report suggests AMD is preparing a range of per-core optimizations for its upcoming Zen 6 processors, including finer control over thermal and power budgets on a core-by-core basis. Tom's Hardware frames these as changes that "might not seem huge on their own," but that could add up to "make a world of difference in gaming performance."

The two specific gains flagged in the report are fewer microstutters and better 1% lows. Both are worth unpacking for non-gamers. A microstutter is a momentary hitch — a frame that arrives late enough to be noticeable, even when the average frame rate looks fine. The "1% low" is a measurement of a game's worst moments: the frame rate during the slowest one percent of frames. A chip can post a great average and still feel rough if those low points are ugly.

Per-core management is the lever here. Rather than treating every core the same when handing out power and thermal headroom, a processor that tunes each core individually can, in principle, keep the cores a game actually leans on running more consistently.

One caveat: this is a report about unreleased silicon, as relayed by Tom's Hardware, not a specification confirmed by AMD.

It matters because the industry has spent years selling gamers on bigger average frame rates, while the thing people actually notice — smoothness — depends on the numbers no one puts on the box.
