Anthropic has introduced India-specific pricing for its Claude AI subscriptions, letting users pay in rupees rather than US dollars. The change covers the company's consumer and business tiers — Pro, Max and Team — according to Moneycontrol and News18.

The entry-level Claude Pro plan starts at Rs 1,999 per month, as reported by Moneycontrol and News18. Some outlets, including Mashable India and The Hans India, round the figure to roughly Rs 2,000 per month. Anthropic's Max and Team plans are also available with local pricing, though the sources here focus on the Pro tier's starting cost.

Beyond the currency switch, the local pricing removes friction that Indian subscribers previously faced. According to Times Now and NewsBytes, paying in rupees eliminates foreign exchange fees that came with dollar-denominated billing. NewsBytes adds that the India pricing includes GST, India's goods and services tax, in the listed amount.

The rollout appears to have been low-key. The Hans India describes Anthropic as having "quietly" launched the India-specific pricing, with users now able to buy a plan starting at around Rs 2,000 per month without needing to pay in US dollars.

Why it matters: India is one of the world's largest markets for AI tools, and pricing in local currency — with forex charges stripped out and tax folded in — lowers a practical barrier for individuals and teams who want to pay for premium Claude access, signaling that Anthropic is competing more directly for Indian subscribers.
