Anthropic's Claude, one of the most widely used AI chatbots, went down for many users on Tuesday in a widespread outage that disrupted access across most of its models.

According to TechRadar, Anthropic initially said it was "investigating" the problem. The company's own status page logged the incident as an "elevated error rate across multiple models" — a thread that drew significant attention on Hacker News, where it gathered 151 points and 176 comments.

The scale was substantial. Tech Times reported that complaints topped 8,000, with users also flagging failures in "agentic" pipelines — the automated workflows that increasingly rely on Claude to run tasks behind the scenes. Livemint reported that thousands of users struggled to access the platform during the disruption.

Anthropic moved fairly quickly to respond. The Hindustan Times noted that, in an update issued around 10:25 AM ET, the company said "the issue has been identified and a fix is being" deployed. Android Authority reported that Anthropic said the fix was already in but that it was continuing to monitor Claude for elevated error rates. The Economic Times confirmed the company had acknowledged the "elevated error rate" while investigating.

By later in the day, the situation had improved. 9to5Google reported that Claude was back online after the major outage that had affected most of its models, and Let's Data Science noted Anthropic had deployed a fix.

The timing is notable: Tech Times framed the failures as mounting ahead of a widely anticipated Anthropic IPO.

Why it matters: as businesses and developers wire AI assistants like Claude directly into the tools and automated workflows they depend on, a single provider's downtime no longer just interrupts chats — it can quietly break the systems built on top of it.
