Facing tightening restrictions on advanced chips, China's artificial intelligence industry is changing its strategy. Rather than trying to match Nvidia one chip at a time, Chinese firms are increasingly betting on "supernodes" — systems that lash together many chips to deliver competitive performance at the level of the whole machine.
According to Digitimes, this pivot toward system-level "super-nodes" was on display at WAIC 2026, where the shift was framed as a direct response to chip export curbs beginning to bite. The idea is that if you cannot buy or build the single most powerful processor, you can still compete by engineering how a large number of less-advanced chips work together.
One company leaning into this approach is the Chinese chip start-up Biren. According to the South China Morning Post, Biren is betting on light-based "supernodes" — using optical, or light-based, connections between chips — as its path to matching Nvidia, the American company whose processors dominate the global market for AI computing.
The move reflects a broader reality: as Washington limits China's access to the most advanced semiconductors, Chinese companies are looking for ways around the bottleneck rather than through it. Optical links and tightly integrated systems are one such workaround, shifting the contest from raw chip specs to overall system design.
