CuspAI, a Cambridge-based startup, has raised a $450 million Series B and launched a new coalition aimed at using artificial intelligence to discover materials for the chip industry and beyond, according to Bloomberg.

Bloomberg reports the funding round was led by two prominent venture firms, Kleiner Perkins and NEA. Alongside the raise, CuspAI unveiled an alliance focused on AI-driven materials discovery spanning semiconductors and other industries.

The coalition has drawn heavyweight backing. According to Seeking Alpha, Nvidia and Meta have joined the alliance, which it describes as Bezos-backed.

The problem CuspAI is targeting is a physical one. As Bloomberg notes, producing the world's most in-demand semiconductors requires enormous amounts of energy and access to rare minerals. Those constraints have become a pressing concern as demand for advanced chips, driven largely by the AI boom, continues to climb.

By applying AI to the search for new materials, the effort could in principle speed up the discovery of alternatives that use less energy or depend less on scarce inputs. That is the kind of bottleneck that ripples outward: the same chips power data centers, consumer devices and the AI systems that companies like Nvidia and Meta are racing to build.

Why it matters: if AI can help find better materials for making chips, it could ease some of the energy and mineral pressures that increasingly shape the entire technology industry.
