A startup called Enigma has raised $70 million to tackle one of robotics' least glamorous but most stubborn problems: telling a robot what to do.

According to TechCrunch, the round was led by Index Ventures and Ribbit Capital, with participation from Conviction Partners, the firm founded by investor Sarah Guo. TechCrunch describes the financing as a seed round — a notably large one for a company at that stage, and a signal of how aggressively investors are chasing the robotics category right now.

The pitch, as TechCrunch frames it, is deceptively simple: make controlling a robot as easy as adjusting the volume. That analogy is doing a lot of work. Turning a volume knob requires no training, no code, and no understanding of what happens inside the speaker. Most robots today are the opposite — they demand specialized software, custom integration, and operators who know the machine intimately.

Beyond the round size, the lead investors, and that framing, the publicly reported details are thin. The available coverage does not specify what Enigma has built, which robots its interface works with, or who its customers are.

Still, the bet is worth watching. The hardware side of robotics has improved rapidly, but the interface layer — how ordinary people actually instruct a machine — remains a bottleneck. Warehouses, factories, and small businesses can buy capable robots and still struggle to deploy them without dedicated engineers.

Why it matters: if controlling a robot really does become as intuitive as turning a dial, the limiting factor in robot adoption shifts from what the machines can do to how many people can tell them to do it.
