Federal energy regulators are stepping in to speed how quickly AI data centers can plug into the nation's electricity grid.

According to reporting surfaced via MSN, federal regulators on Thursday ordered grid operators across a large portion of the country to show how they will accelerate the connection of AI data centers to transmission systems.

The move comes from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). According to Tom's Hardware, FERC says it will order grid operators to fast-track connection applications for AI data center projects that either generate their own power or agree to reduce their electricity demand during peak hours.

Tom's Hardware reports that grid operators must put these changes in place within 90 days.

The conditions matter because they shape who gets to the front of the line. Projects that bring their own power supply, or that can dial back consumption when the grid is strained, won't add the same burden to a system that already serves homes and businesses. In effect, regulators are offering a faster track in exchange for projects that help manage demand rather than simply pile onto it.

Why it matters: AI's explosive growth depends on enormous amounts of electricity, and the slow pace of grid connections has become a bottleneck. By prioritizing data centers that supply or curb their own power, regulators are trying to support the AI build-out without straining the grid that everyone else relies on.
