GlobalFoundries has become the first chipmaker to produce silicon that supports OCI MSA, an open standard designed to help artificial intelligence systems scale up more efficiently inside data centers, according to EE Times.

The move positions GlobalFoundries ahead of rivals in embracing a shared technical blueprint for how AI chips communicate and work together at scale. Open standards like OCI MSA aim to reduce the industry's dependence on proprietary, vendor-locked interconnect architectures — the kind that have historically given a handful of dominant players an outsized grip on how data centers are built.

AI workloads are notoriously demanding. Training and running large AI models requires thousands of chips to exchange enormous amounts of data with minimal delay. Today, much of that communication relies on proprietary technology, meaning customers who buy into one vendor's ecosystem often find it difficult or expensive to mix in hardware from competitors.

By backing OCI MSA with actual shipping silicon, GlobalFoundries signals that the open-standard approach is no longer just a whitepaper proposal — it has real hardware behind it, according to EE Times.

For the broader tech industry, this matters because open interconnect standards could lower barriers for new chip entrants, give cloud providers more flexibility in how they assemble AI infrastructure, and ultimately drive down the cost of building and operating the data centers that power everything from chatbots to drug discovery.
