The company says the push is aimed at boosting three things at once: productivity, quality, and safety. Shipyard welding is among the most physically demanding and technically precise jobs in heavy industry — a task where inconsistency can mean structural failure in vessels that spend decades at sea.
By handing that work to AI-guided robots, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries is betting that machines can deliver more consistent welds faster and with less risk to human workers, who have historically faced high rates of injury in shipbuilding environments.
South Korea has long been a global leader in shipbuilding, competing fiercely with China and Japan for contracts on everything from commercial cargo ships to liquefied natural gas tankers. Automation has become a strategic priority for Korean yards as they look to maintain an edge on cost and quality without sacrificing the precision their reputation depends on.
