India is working on a new generation of swarm drones, with the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) pursuing a system in which as many as 50 drones can fly and operate together as a single coordinated unit, according to a report in The Week.

The basic idea behind a swarm is arithmetic. Instead of sending one large, expensive aircraft against an air defence network, a military sends dozens of small, cheap ones at once. The Week reports that swarm drones have become one of the most important elements of modern warfare precisely because they let militaries overwhelm enemy air defences through sheer numbers rather than depending on a single costly platform.

That inversion is what makes the technology strategically interesting. Air defence systems are built around the assumption that incoming threats are relatively few and individually valuable — worth spending an expensive interceptor on. A swarm flips the cost equation: a defender may end up firing high-priced missiles at low-priced drones, and can be saturated simply by running out of interceptors faster than the attacker runs out of aircraft.

Getting 50 drones to behave as one is largely a software and autonomy problem rather than a hardware one. The drones have to coordinate their flight paths, divide up targets and keep functioning when individual units are lost or jammed — behaviour that has to be handled onboard rather than by human operators steering each aircraft.
