Infineon has opened a new €5 billion chip fabrication plant in Dresden, Germany, and the company credits an unusual technique for getting it running ahead of time.

According to EE Times, which reported from the opening of the Dresden "smart power" fab, Infineon's chief operating officer said a method the company calls virtual fab cloning allowed the plant to be delivered three months ahead of schedule.

The idea behind virtual fab cloning is to replicate the setup of an existing, already-working factory rather than designing a new one from a blank slate. By copying a proven blueprint, a company can shorten the long and expensive process of installing and calibrating the highly complex equipment that modern chip plants require. EE Times reports that this approach is what let Infineon fast-track the Dresden launch.

A smart power fab produces the kinds of chips used to manage and convert electrical power — components that show up in electric vehicles, industrial systems, renewable energy hardware and consumer electronics.

Why it matters: Building a leading-edge semiconductor plant is one of the slowest and costliest projects in modern industry, often taking years and billions of euros before a single chip ships. If a technique like virtual fab cloning can reliably trim months off that timeline, it points to a faster, more repeatable way for chipmakers to expand capacity at a moment when governments and manufacturers around the world are racing to secure their own chip supplies.
