Artificial intelligence lab Midjourney has acquired Co-Star, the popular astrology app known for its blunt daily horoscopes, in a deal first reported by Bloomberg and confirmed by the company on Thursday, according to The Verge.
According to Bloomberg reporter Natalie Lung, the purchase happened in the spring. Co-Star is a free app that uses AI to generate personalized astrological advice, and the acquisition marks an unexpected turn for Midjourney, which is best known for its AI image-generation tools.
As part of the deal, Co-Star CEO Banu Guler is joining Midjourney as its Chief Design Officer, Engadget reported.
The move comes as Midjourney branches out. The Verge notes that the startup has evolved from generating AI cat images to producing full-body ultrasound scans, and Bloomberg reports the company is now building its first standalone image-generation app.
