The AI hardware conversation has been dominated by GPUs. This week it shifted, briefly, to the drives that feed them.
ServeTheHome reports the launch of the Kioxia CM10 series, a new SSD family built for the PCIe Gen6 generation. According to ServeTheHome, the CM10 line is unusually broad: it spans both 2.5-inch and EDSFF form factors, covers PCIe Gen5 as well as Gen6, comes in air-cooled and liquid-cooled versions, and is offered across two generations of NAND flash memory.
Separately, ServeTheHome has also covered the Nvidia CMX Storage Platform, surfaced this week through Google News' Nvidia feed. The available source material names the platform but does not detail its specifications, so its capabilities remain to be filled in.
Here is the plain-language version of why a drive spec sheet matters. PCIe is the high-speed lane that connects storage to the rest of a server; each generation roughly doubles the bandwidth of the last, so Gen6 drives can hand data to processors faster than Gen5 ones. EDSFF is a newer, ruler-shaped drive format designed to pack more capacity into a server chassis and cool it better than the traditional 2.5-inch shape. And liquid cooling appearing on SSDs at all is a signal in itself: it is a technique typically reserved for the hottest, densest parts of a data center.
The breadth of the Kioxia lineup suggests vendors are hedging, selling into data centers that are mid-transition rather than assuming everyone jumps to Gen6 at once.
It matters because AI models are only as fast as the data pipeline that feeds them, and storage is increasingly the bottleneck that decides how much of an expensive GPU actually gets used.
