Novocure said Thursday morning that its electric fields device, used together with chemoradiation, failed to help patients with glioblastoma live longer in a late-stage clinical trial, according to Endpoints News.
Glioblastoma is an aggressive brain cancer. Novocure's technology works by delivering electric fields to the body, an unconventional approach compared with drugs or surgery. The company had hoped a strong result in this Phase 3 study would let it expand how its product is used against the disease.
A Phase 3 trial is typically the final and most rigorous stage of testing before a therapy can win broader regulatory approval. Because this study combined the device with chemoradiation yet did not extend patients' lives, it weakens Novocure's case for growing the product's role in glioblastoma care, Endpoints News reported.
The result is a setback for the company's ambitions to broaden the market for its signature technology.
