OpenAI has rolled out an update to GPT-5.5 Instant, one of its faster AI models, that the company says is better at handling complex requests and figuring out what users actually want.

According to VentureBeat, the updated model improves at shopping tasks, juggling complicated constraints, and understanding user intent. The publication frames the change as part of a broader shift: OpenAI is moving away from models that need heavy hand-holding and toward systems that can infer a user's goal, preserve the constraints they set, and adapt across a back-and-forth conversation rather than treating each message in isolation.

In practical terms, that means if you give the model several requirements at once — say, a budget, a deadline, and a specific format — it should do a better job holding onto all of them instead of dropping some along the way. OpenAI states that GPT-5.5 Instant has improved at understanding and following these kinds of complex, multi-part instructions, according to PCWorld.

Notably, the update is already available in OpenAI's API, the channel developers use to build the model into their own apps and products. That means the improvements can reach third-party tools quickly, not just OpenAI's own chatbot.

PCWorld cautions, however, that OpenAI has not shared much detail about exactly what changed or how the gains were measured — its headline bluntly notes the model "just got smarter, but don't expect a lot of details."
