Barret Zoph has left OpenAI for the second time, departing just five months after rejoining the company in January, according to Hayden Field of The Verge.
At the time of his exit, Zoph was OpenAI's head of enterprise AI sales — the part of the business focused on selling AI tools to companies rather than individual consumers.
This is not Zoph's first departure from the company. According to The Verge, he initially left OpenAI in 2024 to help start Thinking Machines Lab, where he served as co-founder and chief technology officer. He then returned to OpenAI in January, only to leave again five months later.
The sources do not state where Zoph is heading next, why he chose to leave, or whether the move is connected to any broader changes at OpenAI.
The back-and-forth is notable because senior talent has become one of the most contested resources in the AI industry.
