The U.S. military's generative AI platform has gone from a modest pilot program to one of the largest enterprise AI deployments in the world in a matter of months.
According to Business Insider, a Pentagon official revealed that 1.5 million Defense Department workers are now using the military's generative AI tool on a daily basis. The scale of that adoption is striking: according to reporting from MSN, roughly 80,000 employees were using the platform — called GenAI.mil — when it launched in December. That means daily users have grown nearly 19-fold in just a few months.
The Pentagon has not publicly detailed what tasks workers are using the platform for, but the sheer volume of daily engagement suggests the tool has moved well beyond experimental use and into routine workflows across the department.
The rapid uptake mirrors what has happened in the private sector, where companies from finance to healthcare have seen AI tool adoption accelerate sharply once platforms become widely available and easy to access. The difference here is the scale and sensitivity of the institution involved — the U.S. Department of Defense employs roughly 3 million people in total, meaning roughly half the workforce is now engaging with generative AI daily.
