For years, using artificial intelligence to design new medicines sounded like a promise that lived mostly in press releases. That is starting to change.

According to an MSN report, applying AI to create new drugs may be the technology's most important and marketable use — and the idea is no longer merely hypothetical. The report says the approach has now been commercialized, even if it remains in an early stage. In other words, at least one major pharmaceutical company is putting AI to work in real drug-discovery efforts rather than just experimenting with it.

The money following that shift is significant. A market analysis highlighted by openPR projects that the AI in Drug Discovery market will reach $17.56 billion by 2031, a sign that investors and drugmakers expect the technology to become a standard part of how new treatments are found.

Drug discovery has traditionally been slow, expensive and prone to dead ends. The pitch for AI is that it can sift through vast amounts of biological and chemical data to spot promising candidates faster than human researchers alone.

Why it matters: if AI can shorten the years and billions of dollars it takes to develop a drug, it could change both how quickly new treatments reach patients and where the pharmaceutical industry places its biggest bets.
