PsiQuantum, a Palo Alto startup, has begun construction on what it describes as the world's first utility-scale quantum computer, according to reports from The Next Web and others.

The work is happening in Queensland, Australia. The Next Web reports the facility is in Moreton Bay, and Interesting Engineering and others frame it as Australia landing a major quantum project. PsiQuantum has also opened a Test & Validation Lab at Griffith University, according to HPCwire.

The project is heavily backed by public money. According to The Next Web, the build is supported by A$940 million in Australian government funding, along with $100 million from the US CHIPS Act.

It's worth setting expectations: The Next Web notes that a working machine is still years away. Breaking ground is the start of a long road, not the arrival of a finished computer.

The "utility-scale" label is the key claim here. Today's quantum computers are largely experimental, useful for research but not yet for everyday practical problems. A utility-scale machine would, in principle, be large and reliable enough to tackle real-world tasks — the kind of work classical computers struggle with, such as simulating molecules for drug discovery or new materials.
