French quantum computing startup Quandela has been selected to participate in Stage A of DARPA's Quantum Benchmarking Initiative, according to the Quantum Computing Report.
DARPA — the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Pentagon's cutting-edge research arm — launched the Quantum Benchmarking Initiative to rigorously evaluate whether quantum computers can achieve what researchers call "quantum advantage": the point at which a quantum machine can solve real-world problems faster or more efficiently than any classical computer. Stage A is an early assessment phase designed to identify which quantum technologies are worth backing for deeper testing.
Quandela is notable for building photonic quantum computers, which use particles of light rather than superconducting circuits — the approach favored by larger players like IBM and Google. Being selected signals that DARPA considers Quandela's photonic approach credible enough to put through formal, independent scrutiny.
The initiative matters because quantum computing has long been accompanied by ambitious promises and limited proof. By having a neutral, well-funded government body set the benchmarks and run the evaluations, the field gets something it has sorely lacked: independent verification. For Quandela, inclusion is a significant vote of confidence that could open doors to U.S. defense contracts and attract broader investment.
