Researchers at Oregon State University have built a tiny device that lets an AI sensor see, remember, and think in one place — a design inspired by how the brain works.
According to Tom's Hardware, the team developed a brain-inspired phototransistor that combines light sensing, memory, and signal processing in a single piece of hardware. In most of today's systems, those jobs are split across separate components, which means data has to constantly shuttle back and forth between them.
What makes the new device notable, Tom's Hardware reports, is that it can electronically control how long an optical memory lasts — letting a visual impression linger or fade on command, somewhat like the way human memory holds onto some things and lets others slip away.
The practical payoff, according to the report, is energy efficiency. Because the chip senses light and remembers it in the same spot, it cuts down on the energy-hungry movement of data between parts. That could matter a great deal for future AI vision systems — the cameras and sensors that power everything from self-driving cars to smart devices, where battery life and heat are real constraints.
The work is described as a research advance rather than a finished product, so it isn't something you'll find in a phone or car today.
