Two new advances suggest robots are getting better at two things they have long struggled with: working safely next to people, and handling delicate physical tasks.

According to Interesting Engineering, newly certified robot safety technology is designed to let humans work directly beside machines. Certification matters here because it signals the technology has been formally vetted against a standard, rather than simply demonstrated in a lab. In practice, that is the kind of approval that can clear the way for robots and workers to share the same space without heavy cages or barriers separating them.

In a separate report, Interesting Engineering describes a three-armed kitchen robot that cuts raw salmon using touch-sensing it says is 95 percent accurate. Slicing fish is a surprisingly hard problem for a machine: raw salmon is soft, slippery and uneven, so a robot has to feel its way rather than follow a rigid, pre-programmed path. The emphasis on touch-sensing accuracy points to robots that respond to what they feel in the moment, much as a human cook adjusts pressure by hand.

Taken together, the two stories sketch a common direction. One is about trust and safety — making it acceptable for people and robots to operate side by side. The other is about dexterity — giving machines enough sensitivity to manage soft, irregular materials that once required human hands.

The details released so far are limited, and Interesting Engineering is the source for both claims. Even so, the pairing is telling.
