President Trump has signed an executive order directing the federal government to speed up its switch to post-quantum cryptography — encryption designed to withstand future quantum computers powerful enough to break today's security. According to Homeland Security Today, the order is aimed at accelerating that transition across federal systems.
The move comes with hard timelines. Cybersecurity Dive reports that Trump set new deadlines for both federal agencies and government contractors to adopt post-quantum cryptography. IT Security Guru frames the deadlines as a response to White House warnings about "advanced cryptographic threats" — the worry that a sufficiently advanced quantum machine could one day crack the encryption protecting government and financial data.
The order isn't only defensive.
