Codex

Codex is OpenAI's AI-powered coding agent, designed to understand, generate, and navigate source code across a wide range of programming languages and development tasks. Originally introduced as a specialized model for code, it has evolved into a more autonomous agent capable of working within real codebases—finding relevant files, writing functions, and executing multi-step programming tasks with limited human intervention.

Codex is available through OpenAI's own platform and has been extended to Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, giving enterprise customers a cloud-native path to deploy it at scale. OpenAI has also moved to acquire Ona, a startup specializing in background cloud infrastructure for AI agents, with the goal of enabling Codex to handle longer-running, more persistent tasks without interruption.
